The Foundation of ST.Thomas University in Mozambique

'''From an early age, a profound desire was expressed in me to contribute personally to the development of the Mozambican people, considering the man as a whole. Human formation in its different aspects, cultural, academic, technical, but above all moral and civic, was one of the greatest objectives ever set.

On several occasions I have expressed this concern that our country cannot be considered totally free and independent until it reaches higher levels in education and training for its citizens, both in quantity and quality. The fight against the development allayed, at various levels, the proliferation of diseases whose cure becomes difficult only for lack of mastery of science and technology, dependence on the outside, in the economic, political, cultural and other branches, are, of the most important factors that have determined that I personally involved in the creation of conditions of education and education for the Mozambican people, especially for the most disadvantaged layers.

Although I acknowledge the effort that has been made by the Government of the country, it is certain that the path still to be taken is very long. Throughout my life as a priest, archbishop and cardinal, I have been called to come into direct contact with the most difficult part of our people. It was not by chance that I adopted as a motto for all my pastoral activity the phrase "SERVE AND NOT BE SERVED", because I understand that I am at the service of my brothers and not the other way around.

My nomination to Archbishop of Maputo opened doors for a deeper Knowledge of entities, Institutions and personalities from all around the world, allied to the easy of adaptation to the different environments in the in the universe of human diversity. I cultivated a lot of sympathies and in this I saw a great opportunity to put the interest of those that suffer the most above all else.

When sketching the creation of a Foundation with my name I had as assumptions:

a) The exposure of my image created over decades of service for others;

b) The opportunity to help those that are the most in need getting a more noble goal in life;

c) Avoid a large number of young people, still at a age to continue their formation, see themselves in the contingency of entering a world of unemployment due to lack of appropriate academic levels;

d) Use the Foundation as a collective person with a private law for the creation of a University that is the center of education and moral and civic teaching of Mozambican men;

e) To have a Foundation that will be a link of connection that any entity interested in this project eminently social may have space to participate;

f) To accomplish aal the activities connected to the Foundation only for the social character end, Pubic interest and not as a lucrative mean;

g) Cultivate the social solidarity spirit in all domains;

h) Help in the efforts for the absolute poverty eradication in our country;

i) Support the different initiatives of scientific, academic, cultural and investigation character.

As can be seen, the foundation pursues purposes that converge to the integral development of Mozambican society, cultivating a deep respect for the dignity of the human person as a whole and striving to eradicate absolute poverty.

As to achieve these objectives it is necessary to have a educated and educated people, I understood that I could not dissociate the Foundation from the creation of a University, not as being a higher education institution among many, but a space for increased scientific and academic knowledge based on rigor and specialization. The frameworks that will be formed should be endowed with solid knowledge, because the teaching they will benefit from will rule out any possibility of facilitation in the award of academic degrees.

The Foundation cannot be unrelated to the specific situation of the majority of higher education candidates. The state of absolute poverty in which the Mozambican people live should not in itself constitute an obstacle for emerging brains to have no space and opportunity to fully harness their abilities. Through the Foundation, mechanisms can be found to provide the necessary support to these young people and provide the country with higher education staff that they can then be proud of.

Its also important to remember that are many institutions and singular persons, nationals and foreign, that wish to cooperate in a more effective way in the efforts advocated by the Foundation. This one must create space and time to congregate all of the supports that will appear.

Finally, the Foundation will be a way to project the image of the country, internally and externally, taking advantage of the image created by one of its children.”
